Namibia is also one of the largest countries in Africa, covering 824,000 square kilometres, and whilst it has the second lowest population density on the globe, Namibia is home to proud tribes steeped in tradition, herds of rare desert-dwelling elephants, wild horses and massive colonies of seals.  The landscape is comprised of vast and often inaccessible desert, often alien-like terrain, and an extraordinary abundance of wildlife.

Namibia trainYour train:  The African Explorer, as a rolling hotel, offers sleeping compartments with private en-suite, two air-conditioned restaurant cars, a bar car and a lounge car with panorama windows and an open platform at the end. The tempting three-course dinners are served in one sitting. The bar car, open around the clock is ideal for relaxing over a beer or a glass of South African wine and is a popular spot for reading as well as the venue for the fascinating on board talks.There is no formal dress code on your private train and smart evening dress is not required. A laundry service is available during the entire trip.    The  entire  train  and  all  compartments  are  equipped  with  air  conditioning  that  also  functions  when  the  train  is  stationary. The  windows  in  the  compartments  can  be  opened  A  German  physician  accompanies  the  train  and  is  available  for  your  needs  24 hours  a  day.

The Elephant class sleeping compartments offer a private en-suite shower and toilet, individually adjustable air-conditioning, 220/230 V sockets, a small safe, towels, a compact wardrobe with clothes hangers, small bedside cabinets, hair dryer, small toiletries and one small bottle of water per person per train day. The windows (equipped with blind and sunshades) can be opened as needed.

Namibia WindhoekDay 1   24 July, 2019   Arrival in Namibia     Make your own way to Windhoek.  Use your frequent flyer miles or we will find the best airfare for you and team you up with others in the group who may be on the same flight.   *You Australian escort and local guide will meet you at the hotel followed by a Welcome Dinner in the evening where you get to know your guides and the other passengers.   Accommodation:  AVANI Windhoek Hotel and Casino (or similar) overnight.   Our hotel is situated in the heart of Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia. It features a rooftop pool, casino, fitness centre, gym and a spa.   Each air-conditioned room  comes equipped with a minibar, tea-and-coffee-making facilities and a flat-screen satellite TV.   The Dunes Restaurant serves buffet meals and features a shaded terrace. The Oasis Bar and Lounge is located across from the hotel reception area, and the Casino Bar within the casino is a club-style bar.   A 20-minute walk from AVANI Windhoek Hotel & Casino will take guests to the castles of Schwerinsburg and Sanderburg.

Namibia windhoek stationDay 2  25  July, 2019  Departure on the African Explorer    The day starts with a city tour and viewing the neo-Gothic Christ Church and the Tintenpalast, literally the “Ink Palace”, which houses the Namibian parliament. Then at Windhoek station, it’s “All aboard!” and your private train departs! With that proverbial little bit of luck, your journey will be a train safari. This unique route passes through various private game farms where giraffes, antelopes and ostriches are often visible right from the train window!   Overnight on board. Namibia Etosha elephantsDay 3   26 July, 2019  Etosha National Park    Explore the wonders of the Etosha National Park. Your air-conditioned buses will cross the entire park from the south-west to the east – a chance to see elephants, gnus and other wild animals close up on the journey. The Etosha Pan, an extremely flat salt pan, lies at the heart of the National Park. This shimmering “great white place”, as its name says, is the largest salt pan in Africa – and with herds of wild animals passing through, an unforgettable experience! This exciting day ends with an overnight stay in a comfortable lodge nearby.   Accommodation:     Mokuti Lodge (or similar).  Meals included: (BD)   Mokuti Etosha Lodge is situated 5 minutes’ drive from the eastern Von Lindequist gate entrance of the Etosha National Park. It offers 2 outdoor pools, 2 floodlit tennis courts, a spa and a gym.   Decorated with Namibian crafts and rich fabrics, the spacious accommodations at Mokuti Etosha Lodge come equipped with a minibar, coffee/tea facilities and a mosquito door. Each has a private bathroom.  Tambuti Dining Room and Marula Bar serves a variety of dishes. The open-air Boma Restaurant serves African grill specialties in a magical setting with its thatched roof and chandeliers. There is also a pool bar and an evening bar for drinks and snacks.   Guests can play a game of tennis or unwind in one of the massage rooms.  The on-site souvenir shop sells local crafts.

 Namibia EtoshaDay 4   27 July, 2019  On Safari   In the morning, enjoy an extensive safari drive before carrying on to Otjiwarongo where your private train is waiting for you. Namibia SpitzkoppeDay 5  28 July, 2019  Spitzkoppe   Your private train stops at Usakos for an excursion to the granite peaks known as the “Spitzkoppe”. A visit to a local school (except in school holidays) provides an insight into the everyday life of children from the Damara people. Back on board, your train continues to arrive in the late evening in Swakopmund, a town packed with fascinating examples of German colonial architecture.   Overnight on board.   Meals included:  (BLD)

 Namibia Walvis BayDay 6  29 July,  2018  From the Atlantic Shore into the Desert   This morning your main luggage remains on board. After breakfast, your air-conditioned buses are waiting to take you to Walvis Bay where, with luck, you can see flocks of flamingos and pelicans. After a drive of around five hours, you arrive at the Namib Naukluft National Park, passing the Vogelfederberg hill as they approach your lodge for the night.   Overnight: Namib Desert Lodge (or similar)  2 nights   Meals included:  (BD)     Namib Desert Lodge sits at the foot of a red sandstone cliff, which consists of the fossilized dunes of an ancient Namib. It is situated just 60 km north of Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei just 5kms from the main road. Located in the Gondwana Namib Park is shares a border with the Namib Naukluft Park. Namib Desert Lodge is set amongst tall trees and palms. The main building has a reception, bar and a large verandah with outside seating for guests to admire the surrounding scenery. There are also 2 swimming pools. Breakfast and dinner are served buffet style and a small selection of light lunches can be ordered on request. Their cozy bar is well-stocked with South African wines.

Namibia dunesDay 7 30 July, 2019   The Highest Sand Dunes in the World   Early morning is the best time to see the giant dunes of the Namib. Climbing up a dune may be quite tough, but the panoramic view from the top over a sea of apricot-coloured sand is reward enough! Open-top vehicles take you the last few kilometres along an unpaved sandy track to the Vlei, a salt-clay sink surrounded by sand dunes. On the way, you may well be fortunate enough to see oryx antelopes and springboks. As the sun sets, enjoy a romantic journey through the stunning desert landscape.  Meals included:  (BD) 

Namibia desert lionDay 8   31 July, 2019  Namib Naukluft National Park   In the morning, travel on by air-conditioned buses from the lodge to Mariental (about 5 hours drive), where your private train is waiting. The train stops in the small village of Maltahöhe for a tasty brunch – complete with delicious freshly baked bread! As the journey continues you have the chance to attend a Biltong (traditional beef jerky) tasting session.   Overnight on board.   Meals included : (BD)

Namibia ghost town Day 9   01 August, 2019     Ghost Town    Morning arrival in Aus station. Your day’s programme begins with a bus ride to the ghost town of Kolmanskop, where the first diamonds were found in Namibia in 1908. From here, the harbour town of Lüderitz is a short journey through the Sperrgebiet (the “Restricted Diamond Area”). After crossing the historical Lüderitz peninsula, you reach the next highlight of the day – Diaz Point, set against the backdrop of the dramatic Atlantic waves. Back on board at Aus station, your private train continues on its journey south.    Overnight on board.   Meals included : (BD)

Namibia Fish River CanyonDay 10  02 August, 2019  Fish River Canyon     Arrival in Holoog in the morning. The Fish River Canyon, today’s highlight, is the second largest canyon in the world! Climb aboard one of the air-conditioned buses and enjoy the stunning views. There is also a chance to take a short walk along the canyon’s edge. Before sunset there will be some time for a short excursion to a quiver tree forest before your train continues.  Overnight on board   Meals included : (BLD)

Namibia AugrabiesDay 11   03 August , 2019   Augrabies National Park   In the afternoon you arrive in Upington and go on an excursion to Augrabies National Park with its famous water falls. Namibia KimberleyDay 12   04 August, 2019   Diamond City Kimberley
In the morning, your private train will reach the historical train station of Kimberley, the city of diamonds. At the end of the 19th century, the town experienced a real diamond rush, from which the diamond empire of De Beers emerged, led today by the Oppenheimers and founded by Cecil Rhodes. You can view the famous Big Hole, once the largest diamond mind in the world and visit the lovingly restored original buildings of Kimberley’s Belle Époque. In the evening the train crosses the Vaal-River on its way to the 1800 m high Highveld.   Overnight on board   Meals included : (BLD)

Namibia PretoriaDay 13   05 August, 2019  Pretoria    Today you arrive in the South African capital Pretoria. During a city tour we will show you the Union Buildings, the Nelson Mandela-Monument and the home of Paul Kruger. Farewell dinner in the evening.
Accommodation:  Misty Hills Lodge (or similar)  Meals included :  (BD)  Tucked away in the countryside just beyond Johannesburg,  set in the heart of the Kromdraai Valley, close to The Cradle of Human Kind World Heritage Site, Misty Hills Country Hotel, Conference Centre & Spa is a luxurious retreat with rustic charm and natural elegance.  Surrounded by lush gardens and natural forests, the elegantly furnished and stone-built thatched rooms and suites are all equipped with satellite TV, a telephone, and tea- and-coffee making facilities. The private bathrooms are fitted with a bath and shower.Carnivore Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and specializes in game and domestic meats. Vegetarian dishes are also available. Guests can enjoy a traditional barbecues or buffet food around a campfire at the Lapa. Misty Hills also has a coffee shop for light snacks.Guests can unwind in 2 swimming pools, go for a workout in the well equipped gym or get pampered at the spa, which offers a variety of massages and beauty treatments.
